The bison story is bogus, AK has had bison for years in the area south of Fairbanks and a lottery hunt of them.
Well it's a taxonomic thing, the bison herd there now are nominally of the plains bison subspecies whereas the reintroduced herd are woodland bison ( a different subspecies).
