Teckel X Terrier?

The October issue of Earth Dog - Running Dog has a great picture of an old Gypsy caravan on the cover with Dave Sleight, the lurcher and greyhound man, on the right. Great articles and letters are inside, as always, including a nice piece from Aurora Rubel in Kentucky.

Earth Dog - Running Dog has some amusing writers who, while they have differences of opinion on all manner of things, are worth listening to as they are genuine dog men.

For example, I always take time to read Colin Didrickson who is now thinking of crossing Teckels (i.e. working dachshunds) with working terriers to see if anything comes out of the cross. You can read a little about that here, and subscribe to the magazine here

Uhm, I read the article and he seems to be saying he would -not- do that cross (last page) and finds crossbreeding to be too unreliable in the long run. Also interesting is the stuff no one in the show-purebred world ever wants to talk about, namely the amount of culling originally done to get what the first breeders wanted. Interesting article, thanks for the link.

Good read, but as far as I understood the guy is hesitating to do a crossbreed, because he is afraid of the unknown- actually the teckel would gain a lot not inthe hunt but surely inthe leg and spine! I hunt with a wirehaired teckel above and below ground and all this brave littlebig dog lacks is legs ! Chondrdystrophy is autosomal dominant and could easily be selected against- but no way with 80% of breeders breeding for show and companionship-they rule the standard.

Thanks for that catch! While editing code, I deleted a bit 0ff it seems. Blogger now adds odd "ghost code" at the end of some sentences, and it drives me nuts and I sometimes try to clean it out so I can figure where the pic goes as here.
