It looks like Pfizer is going to to shed its veterinary medical unit, a fact which should throw the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) into a tizzy. Who will pay the payola now?
Will whoever buys the Pfizer vet business be quite as generous with conference sponsorships, continuing medical education subsidies, free travel, payola sales jobs to veterinary students, and the deep discounts that enable the American Animal Hospital Association to skim off profit from the products it sells to its members through its "MarketLink" web site?
Will the new owner of Pfizer's veterinary business continue to "partner" with the AKC on defective dogs?
Will the new owners of Pfizer's veterinary unit continue to spread payola to the AVMA in order to promulgate the dependency and fear-based model of veterinary care centered on upcoding, price-gouging, and sales of medically unnecessary goods and services?
Will Pfizer's old veterinary sales force be deemed to be redundant and kicked to the curb?
Time will tell!
