One common outcross for racing huskies is the German short-haired pointer. The Irish setter and foxhound have also been used. Some of the ones that have short-hair in them will point birds. In fact, I remember reading about one that pointed a ptarmigan while on the trail.

There was also a team of standard poodles that didn't place.

Pekes, bassets, bull terrier, and OES's-- forget about it!

When Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories were colonized by Europeans, they brought all of our dogs-- whether they were suitable for hauling or not. Newfoundlands were very common on Arctic explorations, although they certainly weren't Qimmiq.
