Pigeon Truck, 1915

Since I posted a few short bits about wild animal training machines earlier (here and here), I figure this might be a good time to post a picture of a pigeon truck, circa 1915.

This was a mobile coop of homing pigeons used during World War I to carry messages .

Dogs were also used during The Great War to transmit messages across lines and up ditches, to pull carts containing rolls of barbed wire and communication line, and to haul guns from small howitzers to machine guns.

This reminds me of the movie War Horse. It shows the suffering of men and animals who were involved in the war. It was a terrible time indeed.

The movie does have a happy ending which unfortunately was not very realistic but I liked it much better this way.
