California Pet Sterilization Made Simple

AB 1634, California's mandatory surgical pet sterilization law, will be heard by the California State Senate Local Government Committee on Wednesday, July 11.

Here are a few "Just the facts ma'am," bullets on why everyone should write in to oppose this bill:

** Mandatory breeding of unhealth pets: AB 1634 requires that all dogs be sterlized by the age of 18 months, which means that the bill requires the breeding of dogs before they can be adequately tested for hip and other joint issues which typically crop up after age two.

** Puppy mill owners are not covered by this legislation because the bill's backers decided the pet store industry was too hard to fight. The kind of unscrupulous large-scale breeders who have racks of cages and kennels and cannot give time to each dog are going to be given a free pass, while the dedicated hobby breeder who who personally interviews each prospective pet owner is going to be hammered.

** Under this legislation, rare breeds and working breeds would not be recognized as purebred dogs, and would be subject to the mandatory spay and neuter law. This legislation will kill working dog breeds in California -- the dogs most deserving of protection.

** Pure bred dogs are given special preference even though every cynologist can detail, in excrutiating detail, the health issues common to Kennel Club breeds which have been line-bred for generations.

** The bill is being pushed by militant vegans and animal rights activists who are not only opposed to ALL pets, but are also opposed to fried chicken, leather shoes, and the kind of testing that gives us safe vaccines that keep our children healthy.

Keep up the good work. The last edits to this bill were so way out there (the bill was already surreal) that I'm glad CVMA pulled support finally.
