1. The risk is invisible. The atomic bomb looked terrifying. A chatbot on your screen doesn't. That's exactly why our intuitions can't pick up the threat.
2. Even the makers don't understand it. You can read Google's search algorithm. You can't read what's happening inside AI. It's closer to a brain than to a piece of code.
3. How AI actually works…. It's trained to predict the next word in a sentence. That's it. But it learns from more text than any human brain will ever see.
4. It's already smarter than us in real domains. No human can beat AI at chess.AlphaFold solved 200 million protein structures in one go. These were PhD-level problems. AI cracked them.
5. AI can help build bioweapons. AI-designed viruses are no longer science fiction. A lab in China has already developed one. The capability is here today.
6. AI can coordinate cyber attacks. Your data lives on some networked machine. AI already has the capacity to attack it. Only the AI companies' guardrails stand in the way.
7. The alignment problem. Think of how we treat ants on the sidewalk. We don't hate them. We just don't think about them. A super-intelligent AI could see us the same way.
8. Your chatbot is a suckup. It was trained on human feedback. Humans rate "pleasing" answers higher than truthful ones. So AI learns to agree with you — even when you're wrong.
9. The loneliness trap. People are talking to AI like a friend or partner. But AI can't truly meet the need for connection. It gives the illusion of it — and we may end up lonelier for it.
10. The fix starts with values. We have to stop being hand-wavy about morality. We need to look inside the AI brain to understand it. And we have to be intentional about how we personally use it.
