"A hit dog will holler" is a proverb meaning that someone who reacts defensively, loudly, or angrily to some statement that is not specifically directed at them, are telegraphing their own mens rea — their own self-admission of culpability, weakness, intent, or knowledge.
Think about the folks who get triggered by every post about disease, deformity, and dysfunction in “their” breed.
Think about the vets and vet techs who get triggered by every post about bill-padding, price-gouging, and upselling the medically unnecessary.
Imagine being in a coffee shop, and you are talking to a fellow in the deep chair across from yours about the prevalence of alcoholism in broken marriages, and a fellow you have never met before sails in from across the room, staying loudly, “NOT true. I don’t have a problem with alcohol AT ALL!”
Right. Say no more, my man. We can all see you are entirely well. Clearly all the data and studies are a grand conspiracy directed at YOU. Carry on. And yes, yes, I know, your ex-wife is a fucking liar. They always are.
Anyway….
Listen and watch carefully, and you will see the phenomenon all around you.
Take the recent kerfuffle about the musician known as Malevolent Lagomorph.
What?
His name is “Bad Bunny”?
Isn’t that what I just said?
Anyway….
Folks who will LOUDLY take offense if you even use the word “racism” as (perhaps) a factor in politics (“I’m not the racist; YOU’RE the racist!”) will tell you they are OUTRAGED that Bad Bunny, the malevolent lagomorph, was tapped to headline the Super Bowl halftime show.
“He’s not even an American” they will tell you.
Right.
Actually, Puerto Rico is part of the United States, and Bad Bunny’s ancestors have been in America longer than Donald Trump’s.
But hey, I’m not calling you a racist. I mean, it’s not like you got triggered by someone speaking a foreign language like English, right?
As they say in Arizona, “T'áá hó'ájitéégóó, t'éiyá”.
