If they're true puffballs - they are edible. they have an amazing flavor - nothing like store bought mushrooms. Pick them kinda early and slice and saute them - YUM! I tried my first in WI just a few years ago - sooo good. I found some here in CO at 9k ft - didn't taste very good at all! probably cuz they're growing on decomposed rock and not rich soil.
