Christiane Amanpour had a profile of former Israeli President Shimon Peres on CNN this morning.
Not mentioned: Shimon Peres, age 15, applied for Palestinian citizenship in 1937. Shown is the application, which includes his signature, an oath of loyalty to the Palestinian government, and a request to change his name from Shimmel to Shimon.
This document is preserved in the Israeli State Archives, and is one of about 67,000 Jewish applications for Palestinian citizenship during the British Mandate (1937–1947), mostly from Eastern European Jews who later held key roles in Israel.
In 1945, a 23-year old by the name of Shimon Perski and 59-year old David Ben-Gurion found a nest of Bearded Vultures in the Negev desert of Israel.
Young Persky liked the hebrew name for the bird -- Peres -- so much that he changed his name to Shimon Peres.
