RABIES IS ENDEMIC in this area. It’s most often found in the raccoon population, but also in feral cats, bats, and skunks.
Any mammal can carry rabies — even a groundhog — though opossums have such a low body temperature that after an initial exposure the virus dies out fairly quickly.
