From Newsweek:
Asher Watkins, a millionaire ranch broker and prominent trophy hunter, has died after being gored by a buffalo he was tracking on a hunting trip in South Africa.
A 1.3-ton Cape buffalo, sometimes called "Black Death," killed the 52-year-old last Sunday, in a "sudden and unprovoked attack," according to Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CVS), the company that organized the trip….
An experienced hunter and supporter of wildlife conservation — arguing that ethical hunting sustained preservation — Watkins maintained an active membership in organizations like the Dallas Safari Club and Ducks Unlimited.
Right. A hunter got gored and killed by formidable quarry.
Assumed risk.
But… “a sudden and unprovoked attack”?
Excuse me, but this fellow flew across the world with a GUN with the expressed purpose of killing a Cape Buffalo.
This wasn’t murder, this was self-defense.
Isn’t it just like millionaires and billionaires to say every attack is unprovoked?
They can steal your savings, sell you poison, cut off your healthcare, deny you life-saving treatment, throw thousands off the job, defraud public institutions, and cheer on masked gunmen who round up your neighbors, but if you fire back it’s always going to be described as “unprovoked”.
Where I come from, it’s called “Fuck around and find out,” and the goring of millionaires by the animals they are hunting isn’t going to get me sending sympathy cards.
Or to put it another way: Luigi Mangione did nothing wrong.
