I think Peter Apps’ work using boundary market scents to deter predators and large herbivores from entering areas where human-wildlife conflicts are certain, is some of the most important conservation work being done today.
Peter writes: “Since this was posted, the camera trap bycatch from work on predator BioBoundaries, supported by Natural Selection and Pelorus Foundation, has shown that the plant scent that produced the reactions in this video is not the only one that repels elephants. As always, making any further progress on using them to reduce human-elephant conflict depends on funding.”
Bottom Line: If you know someone with a foundation or company interested in rural African development, rare species conservation, agricultural economics…. or if you know a wealthy hunter-conservationist or a wealthy animal welfare advocate…. send them this post.
Peters work is IMPORTANT, and it’s the kind of work that can make a world of difference all around the world.
As someone who used to work for one of the world’s largest “Big Green” groups, I assure you that money sent there is too often pissed down the rat hole of direct mail. You want to donate and make a difference? Fund field biologists like Peter Apps, who is boots on the ground and struggling to solve real problems real people and real animals really have.
