Ravens Riding the Wind

Ravens riding the wind on top of the cliffs at Fort Funston, California.

Fort Funston is now a protected area within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), and is locally famous as an off-leash dog park. Lots of dogs living their best life here, and a lot of professional dog walkers with them.

Fort Funston used to be the Lake Merced Military Reservation. Old concrete pillboxes are scattered on top of the cliffs, but the big gun batteries, with their 12- and 16-inch guns, are long gone, as are the Nike missile batteries that replaced them.

In 1963, Fort Funston was deactivated, and the land transferred to the National Park Service to be administered as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
