A month or two back, a large chestnut oak was dropped, and I have
started carving part of the stump into a head that will look up, as if birding.
If it doesn’t work out, it’ll be firewood.
As I rounded the stump head with the dogs, I suddenly spied two baby
raccoons on the ground.
What the hell?
Misto was on a baby quick, but I grabbed him and roared, and he let go.
Moxie tried to pick up where Misto had dropped off, but I tailed her up before
she got much of a grip. With one terrier scruffed, and the other terrier tailed, I
waddled over to the dog yard and tossed them over the fence.
The two raccoon kits seemed unharmed, but their mom was nowhere to be
seen, and by now they had started to climb the oak head.
There’s a hollow in this stump, under the head, but the baby raccoons did
not come from there, and their mother was not in there either.
I squeezed off a few pictures and carried on with my chores. When I came
back, the two raccoon kits had climbed down off he head and walked 20 feet down
the main trunk, where they were resting. Only then did I notice the color
differentiation between them.
Mom is no doubt nearby, and there is a small frog-ladden pond about 200
feet down hill, so food is about. I suspect the mother will show up when it gets
dark.
