If you were looking for useless things, gold and diamonds would be at the top of the list. You cannot eat them, make fire with them, make a useful tool from them, or tie something together with them. They provide no warmth, hold no liquid, cut no wood, provide no shelter, do not reproduce, and convey little or no information. They are — quite literally — the first scams built around the status to be derived from putative rarity.
