The First Gay Pride Day

ON THIS DAY in 1979, the first gay pride civil rights march took place in Washington D.C.

I remember it well, as I was hitch-hiking in from the Midwest with a dog, visiting my parent’s new house on Dupont Circle.  As I walked down the sidewalk with a big Kelty BB5 backpack and terrier in tow, a fellow in very small shorts, and no shirt, roller-skated up to me, and did a twirl, revealing that his shorts had no bottom in them. He giggled, and then skated away. Never seen anything like it before or since, and I lived or worked in that neighborhood for the next 40 years.

Lots of Gay Pride celebrations since; always fun.
