Monkey Pox is in the news, and I happen to live down the street from one of only two Biosafety Level 4 suites in the US -- the place they keep the stuff that will kill you (including Monkey Pox), for which there is no cure and no vaccine.
Reading Crisis in the Hot Zone in New Yorker (1992), by Richard Preston, I came across this paragraph about Nancy Jaax, the Lieutenant Colonel who was the head of pathology division of the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) unit:
Nancy Jaax said to me, “My vaccinations were for yellow fever, Q fever, Rift Valley — there were so many. The V.E.E., E.E.E., and W.E.E. complex, anthrax, and botulism. And, of course, rabies, since I’m a veterinarian.” She had an underlying medical condition that caused her immune system to react badly to the shots: the shots made her sick. The Army therefore stopped her vaccinations and assigned her to work in a space suit in the Biosafety Level 4 suites. “There aren’t any immunizations for most BL-4 agents, and that’s why you work in a space suit,” she explained.
Oh, and Good luck!
