Bald eagle eggs hatch just as the shad begin to run up the river.
Driving across Key Bridge the other day, I noticed a lot of white on the Three Sisters rocks. What was that?
By the time I turned onto the parkway paralleling the islands, I had guessed bird poop. Yep.
As I rolled by, I saw maybe 30 Double-crested Cormorants huddled on an upstream rock. They too had arrived in numbers for the shad, which run up from the ocean to as far as Great Falls, about one mile up river from this location.

The picture show here was taken from a location just in front of the Three Sisters, but sadly the tree and nest are now gone due to a windstorm sometime last year.

My dad used to bring home shad from one of the feeder rivers in Northern Virginia. Good eating! And an excellent source of calcium without a fishy flavor.
