Going Up — Literally

The 2,190-mile long Appalachian Trail, which starts about 10 miles south of Springer Mountain, Georgia, runs through Georgia and along the North Carolina-Tennessee border before entering a 500-mile stretch running the length of Virginia.

There's a 20-mile stretch that runs right along the Virginia-West Virginia border before it crosses the Potomac into Maryland along a pedestrian bridge at Harpers Ferry.

The picture, above, was taken at the base of the bridge crossing between Maryland and Harpers Ferry. This is the sign you see heading south, where you climb the steel stairs to the pedestrian walk along the railroad trestle.

If you're descending the bridge and going north, you take a right and march down the C&O Canal about three miles before taking a left and climbing up to Weverton Cliffs on South Mountain, which I visted yesterday.

There's 40 miles of Appalachian Trail in Maryland before it enters Pennsylvania at Pen-Mar. There's 229 miles of Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania.
