How We Get Feral Parakeet Colonies
A hoarder's son dropped off 500 parakeets at a Michigan shelter just before Christmas.

Hawk Eye for Windmills
Wind turbine companies are using cameras and artificial intelligence to see hawks, eagles and vultures migrating along ridge lines and to shut down the windmills when they approach. When used in Australia, the tracking system cut eagle deaths at the Cattle Hill Wind Farm by more than four-fifths.

Surfer Bait
A California surfer was killed in shark attack on Christmas Eve near Morro Bay State Park beach, north of Santa Barbara.  As always, pet dogs kill more people in the US every year than all US wolf, mountain lion, shark, alligator, coyote, bear, and python attacks combined.  And dogs only kill one fifth (or less) of the people killed every year in this country by cows, horses, or bees.

Sharks as Covid Prevention?
Shark proteins can act as antibodies against Covid and its variants.

The Slave Trade Today
The US Constitution specifically allows slavery, and in our fields (and some factories) the importation of unfree foreign labor has never really stopped.

The Great David Attenborough
David Attenborough has an amazing number of title letter abbreviations after his name -- a small suggestion of how important he has been in the pantheon of conservation education.  From Wikipedia we find he is: OM GCMG CH CVO CBE FRS FSA FRSA FLS FZS FRSGS and FRSB.

Gifts That Keep Giving
Research shows that aid to people living in extreme poverty in India generated positive effects on consumption, food security, income, and health, which grew fairly steadily for seven years, and then remained intact after 10 years as well.

The Toronto Circus Clown Riot of 1855
"These weren’t the kind of clowns you want to mess with. They were, by all accounts, a pretty rough crew. They were in town for just a couple of days...It seems the clowns picked the wrong brothel. This one was a hangout for some of the men in a local volunteer fire brigade: The Hook & Ladder Firefighting Company. And these weren’t the kind of firemen you wanted to mess with either."  Read the rest hereThis needs to be a movie -- the confrontation that sparked the creation of the Toronto Police Force.

Sheep Bones as Kitchen Utensils
For centuries, England’s go-to apple utensil was a sheep bone -- a way of making chewable bits for people with famously bad teeth in the era before dentures.

Canadian Racism
Indigenous women are nearly 50% of all federally-sentenced incarcerated women in Canada. The proportion of Indigenous men and women in Canadian federal custody has reached a new historic high, surpassing 30% of the overall incarcerated population.
