The First the Washington Monument

Carolyn ascending the first-to-be-completed Washington Monument, built in 1827 on South Mountain near Middletown, Maryland.  The monument sits on the border between Washington and Frederick Counties, smack on top of the Appalachian trail which extends from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Main.  The much-rebuilt (at least four times) 40-foot stone tower is a great location to spot migrating hawks, but was socked in by fog on this visit.
