Only Protestants Need Apply

This “Jobs offered” listing is from the New York Times of May 1, 1855.  Note the “No Irish need apply,” which is echoed — and expanded — in the “Protestant” demand for cooks, nurses, chamber maids.  Catholic Irish or Italians were not to be considered, nor Black Baptists, or Russian Jews.
