The battle to rid Lord Howe Islands of rats continues. Even after 40 tons of rat poison was dropped on the island off the east coast of Australia, and 22,000 traps deployed, at a cost of $17 million dollars,
at least 100 rats still roam the islands -- more than enough for the population to bounce back unless more hammers are dropped.
Another $3 million has been provided for a second phase of monitoring and rat eradication.
When the Lord Howe rodent eradication program started in 2019, the Island had a population of 300,000 rats and mice -- nearly 1,000 rodents for each of the island's 350 people.
