Painted Bunting, Great Falls, Maryland













Painted Buntings are in the cardinal family, and  are normally in Florida, Mexico, or Central America this time of year.  This fellow went north, stayed around, and has been much photographed.  I've found him three times in a little amphitheater below Great Falls, where there is a small pool of water next to a 40 foot-dry stone wall supporting the canal tow path above.
