I visited the watershed above town today.
The very top of the mountain has a huge swath of ferns growing underneath oaks, hickories, walnuts, and maples. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more luxuriant cover of ferns.
The watershed here is 7,000 acres (about 11 square miles) and is operated as hunting land for deer, turkey, deer, squirrel, and grouse. Small ponds attract wood ducks and mallards.
The watershed flows seamlessly into a 1,200 acre state forest -- another two square miles of forested mountain land.
The black bears that very occasionally come into town are probably migrating down from here.
The mountain bike trails here are supposed to be among the best on the East Coast, but they’re not beginner’s trails. My gravel bike would not make it here; you need massive tires and hydraulic shocks.
