Happy Below and Above

Tight pipe, but a happy dog.

Moxie weighs 9 pounds, and can can get anywhere a fox, raccoon, or adult groundhog can.

All our dens are natural dug; no artificial earths or drains and no badger settes. Different dens in different places may find a larger dog useful, but in the eastern US, where root and rock are common and almost all dens start off as groundhog holes, a large dog means a lot of unnecessary digging. Small dogs waste less energy digging, can move quicker underground to avoid teeth, and are less likely to get bottled by dirt. That said, my ideal size for a working terrier is an 11 inch dog that weighs 11 pounds — the extra weight gives the dog more reserve on winter days.
