Dogs in Vatican Tapestries

Two quick pictures of dogs and other critters to be found in the Belgian tapestries lining the halls of the Vatican.

The first tapestry shows a spaniel, with a bone, and a cat facing off.  Fairly realistic!

The second tapestry shows a swimming retriever among ducks, a badger exiting a hole, a rabbit, a stag, what I believe is supposed to be a hedgehog, as well as a snake, a lizard, a rat, and what I believe is a ferret, a crane, and perhaps a pike. I am not sure what the creature on the lower right is supposed to be.  A sea monster? A hyena in water?

These photos were taken in the glomming, without a flash, using my IPhone.  I am amazed the camera did so well!
