Wolves are not dogs and dogs are not wolves. They differ in estrus cycles, hierarchy signaling, and vocalization, to name just three key issues.
Why do wolves howl? To say: “We are here, come no farther, this is our pack and our land”.
Howling prevents pointless clashes and, apparently, wolf pack territorial boundaries are almost always respected as this wonderfulillustration of radio-collar tracked wolves from the Voyageurs Wolf Project makes clear.
