Theodore Roosevelt Island is an 88-acre island in the Potomac River between Roslyn, Virginia and Georgetown, and just upstream from the Kennedy Center. It's all forest and marsh with good paths maintained by the National Park Service.

At various times, the island has been a native fishing village, a farm, home to a mansion and gardens, a camp housing 1,200 former slaves under protection of the US Army, and an unsanctioned proving round for the electrical detonation of explosives. In the 2014 movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the island was the site of the Triskelion, the headquarters of the fictional S.H.I.E.L.D. spy agency.
