John Huston With Greyhounds

John Huston with greyhounds in Ireland in 1968. The caption said “whippets,” but if so, they are BIG ones.

I watched “The Man Who Would Be King” (a John Huston-directed film) last night on Amazon. It's a Rudyard Kipling story, with Michael Caine and Sean Connery in the lead roles, and released in 1975. A terrific movie.

The movie was shot in Ouarzazate, Morocco. Ouarzazate was just a wide spot in the road when I stopped there as a kid in 1969. Lawrence of Arabia had been filmed there, and over the next 30 years it became a movie location for quite a lot. But in 1969, the one hotel had bed sheets that moved with the insect life inside the mattress. Still a favorite family story.

  1. His son, Tony Huston is a very active falconer. His son Matt Huston documented a season in a lovely internet movie: "Look Up and Wave Your Glove" on Vimeo and YouTube.
