Coffee and Provocation

Are Dogs Key to Saving Elephants?
It's hoped that ivory-sniffing dogs can put an end to ivory smuggling Kenya's Mombasa port. The new regime involves the use of a Remote Air Sampling for Canine Olfaction (Rasco) machine which will sucked air out of targeted shipping containers, pass it through a filter, and then have the filters presented to the dogs who are trained to sit down if they smell anything suspicious, from ivory to illicit animals, plants and timber products.

Humans Are Hybrid
We've known for some time that human were hybrids, with a little neanderthal DNA coursing through our blood.  Now, it turns out we likely have a little DNA from another branch of the human family, the Denisovans. Now, a small piece of bone found in a cave in Siberia reveals that it comes from a first cross child whose mother was a Neanderthal and whose father was a Denisovan.

An Island Sanctuary for Middle East Wildlife
Sir Bani Yas is a 30-square mile island that lies about 150 miles southwest of the United Arab Emirates' capital of Abu Dhabi. Once inhabited by the Bani Yas tribe who first moved there 7,000 years ago, it was abandoned by the tribe at least a century ago. Just 45 years ago, the island was essentially a barren rock with no trees or freshwater sources. That's when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the United Arab Emirates, decided to transform the island into a nature reserve to give sanctuary to endangered animals of the UAE, Africa, and beyond. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had over 2.5 million trees planted on the island, put in a vast pipeline system to irrigate the island, and planted mangroves around the island to shield it from storm surge. Today Sir Bani Yas is home to luxury resorts and the Arabian Wildlife Park which features a savanna-like reserve filled with 16,000 animals, including Arabian oryxs, giraffes, gazelles, hyenas, jackals, and cheetahs.
