The AKC Is Going to Give Titles for THIS?

Apparently this is a new AKC "sport" for which you get to put titles behind your dog's name.

The AKC, which has collapsed from 1.5 million registrations a year to less than 450,000 is desperate to boost numbers. Will trick training do the trick?

Save us and preserve us, that's novice level obedience with a stupid grin while striking a pose. Never mind she would have been disqualified for rewarding the dog with food in the ring.

Walking your dog on leash in a big circle qualifies as a trick? The AKC is truly desperate for more revenue. I compete in agility, and the AKC takes a $3.50 recording fee for a dog's first run, then $3.00 for each additional run that day. In my area, that represents about 13% of the first run entry fee and almost 19% of additional run entry fees. Other venues (USDAA, CPE and UKI) are significantly cheaper to enter, and I can see AKC pricing itself right out of agility pretty soon.

"Do More With Your Dog!® has awarded 14,000 "Trick Dog" titles, which are earned by the demonstration of tricks to a Certified Trick Dog Instructor, and not required to be performed in front of an audience."

And since you probably paid your "Certified Trick Dog Instructor" for lessons, it is unlikely that said Instructor will not award the titles and since you don't have to perform in front of an audience there is no neutral third party to judge competency.

Win-Win as long as training isn't the actual goal.

I always train my dog in 4 inch heels and pose whenever possible, too. It's important for the bonding experience.

Well let's see. My dog walks on a leash, and I can wave. Hoops, done it."Get out", and she looks for mark in direction I point. "Table", and she jumps-up on anything nearby. "Get in" and she sits at my feet. "Stay", and she stays.

5-10 ft? I am talking 100 yds and more. It's just for fun. Her only motivation is playing together and socializing...completely self-rewarding. Same for me. Competition, for us, would sabotage the entire relationship. AKC has never served a justifiable purpose. And yes, I've already gathered and eaten ripe bunch of grapes before they went bad.

Good looking young lady in video, and hope she and her dog continue having fun together. -- TEC

With music like that you can be certain there won't be an audience. What a bore.

Well, they've really dug into the question of how much more impressive you can make an ordinary dog look by holding a precise beauty pageant stance while standing next to it.

Maybe I should use that approach in the rest of my life. Stand in fourth position, blinding smile, and voila my morning bagel is competitive cooking. Somebody pin a medal on me.
