You have to admire the Russians: they did it in the most American way; they bought their way in through the front door. They did it with cold hard cash.
It was not a sneak attack in the dead of night. They did not hide what they were after.
They did it in front of everyone, on national TV and on our iPhones, confident of the deep ignorance and short attention spans of middle America.
They hung us with our own rope, twisting the oldest of cords: greed, fear, sexism, racism, lust, pride, covetousness, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth.
They saw our open communication channels and our weak press corps as something to be exploited rather than saluted.
And they were right.
