Coffee and Provocation

It Might Work for the AKC Too:
Chevrolet and Ford are hell-bent on turning the corner by putting an end to their old business plan of making little more than crap cars and a lot of excuses.  The new goal -- cars with decent gas mileage that are well made.  As The New York Times notes:  "By refocusing on small cars and de-emphasizing the gas-guzzlers that had long sustained the industry, General Motors and Ford in particular are preserving jobs and positioning themselves to prosper. Their efforts are already paying off in the marketplace. Ford's tiny Fiesta is the best-selling subcompact in the United States this year, and G.M.'s Chevrolet Cruze outsold every other compact car in America last month except the segment-leading Honda Civic.  Nearly one in four vehicles sold in the United States in April was a compact or subcompact car, compared with one in eight a decade ago. Of the small cars sold in April, about 27 percent were American models, compared with 20 percent a year earlier."

I Like Dachshunds:
I like dachshunds.  They have good noses and great booming voices underground.  But I won't own one, and this is why:  Forty percent of Dachshunds die from traumatic neurological disease  (intervertebral disk disease). I knew the number was high, but even I am surprised it is this high!

A Great Jack Russell Story:
A great Jack Russell story is told over at the Vet on the Edge blog.  Check it out!

Three More Breeds Come to the AKC
In an effort to try to bolster their crashing membership (at current rates of decline, they will be gone by 2025), the AKC has added three more  breeds to their roster.  The American English Coonhound (What, they have raccoons in England??), the Finnish Lapphund, and the Cesky Terrier are the 171st, 172nd and 173rd registered breeds flying under the AKC banner. One is a hunter (but probably not in the AKC), one likes to herd reindeer (but probably not in the AKC) and one is one of the most inbred breeds on earth (a fact which is sure to continue in the AKC).

Family Planning for Men:
The RISUG injection lasts for ten years, is completely reversible and has no side effects.  Want to know about 22 other contraception options?  See here.

Medical Marijuana and Credit Cards:
Apparently more than a million people in the U.S. are now smoking "medical marijuana." But will your dealer licensed vendor take a credit card? The jerks law-abiding people at American Express will not, but Visa and Discover say YES, and MasterCard is studying it.

Turning the Tide on the Decline in Fisheries:
Efforts to curb overfishing are starting to show results.  They say the trick is management, but I would also argue that the trick is simply to eat less fish and more chicken.  At the very least, please stay away from swordfish, shark, sea bass, tuna, flounder and shrimp.

Brilliant Nests Made by Bird Brains:
Photographer and urban naturalist Sharon Beale had a terrific idea: photograph birds nests already collected and gathering dust in the back cabinets of museums, and use them to teach about birds and their ways. She has a book (buy the book!), but she also gives a peak at the nests for free on her Flickr account. Marvelous!

Saving Our Forests... Maybe:
Emerald Ash Borer beetle threatens America's ash trees, but scientists are hopeful that parasitic wasps imported from Asia, may yet knock them to their knees. More here.

Wow, I didn't know 40% of dachshunds died from IDD. I must have been lucky all these years.
