Old House Porn

Every Friday, I get an email from Oldhouses.com  which is always good for a round of "I gotta retire and get the hell out of here."

These are older houses, often in terrific condition, at ridiculously low prices (by Washington, D.C., standards, at least).

Most of these houses are in small towns just off the freeway... or waaay off the freeway in some cases, and many are also in depressed towns where the only employer was the local pickle factory.

Still....

Another fair warning:  a lot of these houses are more house than anyone would want, many are far from maintenance free (ever paint a "painted lady??) , and some of the towns are too small for an active mind.

That said, there are exceptions.

Appended below is a small sampler..... enjoy!

WOW.

No more old houses for me though. Our current house is an "old house" that the previous tenants painted in oil paint - and then over top of it in Latex.

Fun!

Beautiful homes. Come to Southern California and you can get a delightful foreclosure in that price range. But the weather is nice...

Dag, everything I look at it in SC is "horse country" pricey. Not like our Metro D.C. pricing, but still no bargain where I want to be. I'll have to see where in the hinterlands these houses are. Always fun to look!

Where I live those prices wouldn't get you a garage, let alone a house!

Just realized how old this blog is ... but just stole a vacant 4200 square foot 1885 victorian "mansion" in Pennslyvania for the mere asking price of 45000.00. 5 bedrooms 3 fireplaces additional servant quarters with a full apartment including a kitchen. 10 and 14 ft ceiling throughout. ( even the basement) A solarium, wine cellar and full walk in cedar closet. May take twenty years to restore it ~ but it will be so worth it
