Here's a blog post about Trevor Denman's great race call:

The Easties like their Tom Durkin, especially at Saratoga, but there's no better racecaller in the world than South African Trevor Denman, the voice of Santa Anita and Del Mar.

In his off-season, he's an Idaho cattle rancher.

It was one of the most exciting horse races I have seen and ranks right up there with the Derby run by Mine That Bird and the spectacular Belmont win of Secretariat.

With all the trouble at the starting gate with a horse not wanting to go in and causing trouble once he was in, having to scratch him and unload all the horses from the gate only to reload them again, from her breaking on the wrong lead and being dead last for the first half mile and then to finish up in the style she did, well it was unforgettable.

Wow Zenyatta, you go girl!

Kind of a pleasant surprise to see a good filly on the track, similar to what happened this year in the Preakness with Rachel Alexandra. Those trainers who padded the field or withdrew their horses rather than run against a filly are just idiots and need to get their collective heads into the current era.

I've seen some bitches do a fine job in Schutzhund trials, achieving scores that rank up there with the best of the boys. I have yet to hear anyone whine and moan about that!

Normally in horse events mares and stallions/geldings are considered to be equal, and it is no big deal to ride one or the other.

I am not sure why its not this way in race horses. I suspect some of it might be that trainers and owners may take less time with the mares, because frankly they will make more money on a stallion in the long run because they can breed a number of mares a year whereas a mare is limited to a fewer number of foals over her lifetime.

Thank you for showing the race! It was a very exciting one.

This clip was far superior to the ESPN commentary I watched live. It was indeed an incredible performance and shows even the uninitiated how professional horses can be when they know and love their jobs. Mike Smith was masterful, and watching him struggling to get Zenyatta to change leads on the first straight was almost painful. It was a rough start, a rougher trip and she showed unrivaled grit in her win. Just spectacular.
