Missoula Chicken War :: A True Story
American democracy at its finest: Irrational fear, prejudice, edible pets as hobby farm, extreme rights demands, philosophy, romanticism, arbitrary limits, obvious restrictions, contrived crisis, and all nicely stewed in (of all places), Missoula, Montana. .
My city allows chickens. I have 12 chickens. You would never know, except that I have a rooster. My neighbors have never complained to me or anyone else. Actually, most people I talk to like to hear the roosters as it reminds them of better places and simpler times.
There was a huge to-do about chickens in suburban Columbus last year. A resident in Westerville (or Worthington? can't remember) found her chickens killed by local dogs and alleged that someone had cut the wire around the coop to let the dogs in, and that's pretty much what blew it open as far as I know. I personally wouldn't mind having a few hens if our ordinance allows it. Our backyard here is large enough, but we know our neighbors well enough to know they wouldn't appreciate it. Plus, it means that my mother would have to move some hostas...NOTHING gets between her and her hostas, even though chickens are her favorite animal and the house is covered with chicken regalia.
