Good Things Aloft in Khazakstan

Libby Bodio with Golden Eagle in Khazakstan.

The BBC reports that in Khazakstan, Saker Falcons are being hacked back into the wild, just as we did with Peregrines some years back. Though the Saker is not really endangered (and neither was the Peregrine if you look at global population numbers), a "giving back" to the wild by falconers has a spiritual quality even if it does not necessarily patch a huge hole in the sky. And 60 more falcons flying free in Khazakstan can be nothing but a good thing.

In Almaty, the Falcon Centre has become a small tourist attraction. That too is good, and not only for the Saker, but also for the Golden Eagle, which is being preserved, valued and protected as part of Khazaktan's ancient hunting culture.
