UK Boy Scouts Say No to Knives on Camping Trips

Scouts to no longer bring penknives on camping trips

A Scouts spokesman said: "We believe that young people need more places to go after school and at weekends, where they can experience adventure without the threat of violence or bullying and the need to carry weapons.

"Scouting helps to prepare young people with valuable life skills, while keeping them safe by not carrying knives."

Read here to learn why Every Man Should Carry a Pocket Knife.

My knife of choice is an Opinel No 8. I just gave oen of my old ones to my daughter to take with her to Argentina. I might have to order a new one with my name engraved.

Stop these people, they have gone over the top.
"Specific situations" Huh? I guess these situations don't include when you have to "Be Prepared"?
What's going on over there anyway?
And no more goldfish as prizes? Don't you wish this was all a bad dream or something?

Pen-knives in the UK are getting to be more and more of a problem, at least for those of us who would like to carry such an item for its utility value. The main problem is that the authorities have for a long time been confusing an action carried out by a person with the tool used to carry out such an action.

So, the broad guidelines for a pocket knife in the UK are that it may not have a locking blade, the blade that it has may not be more than three inches long, and that a police officer may over-ride these guidelines whenever he/she chooses and impose a fixed penalty on the carrier and also confiscate the item; most people lack the time of nerve to escalate such a seizure up to the level of a magistrates' court.

The overall effect is that police officers can do what they choose inside fairly broad guidelines, but are themselves constrained by the sheer volume of useless paperwork that such actions entail. The net effect here is that if you're law-abiding you tend to live in fear of police punishing the most minor infractions, whereas if you've already been in trouble you know that little more can happen to you and that the system can be played to defeat its self.

In the USA, you still have a constitution and an ability to make your authorities play by the rules. Do so. You won't like the alternatives.

"Ewww, don't eat the green ones, they're not ripe yet."

Sounds to me like it's time for another revolution! Reminds me of a story my grandmother told me about how someone was killed by milk... seems a case of it fell on his head. Go figure... Seriously, the real reason why pocket knives are being outlawed in Britain is because the people are letting them do it.
