The Poster Child for Greed, Madoff won’t likely see daylight in the outside world for a long long time. The clear intent here was to sell this seriously flawed test as a diagnostic tool for human-animal interactions, not as a epidemeoligical research tool (which is not a commercial market moved by press releases).

I think we all have the story at this point: No lab, no capital, no FDA approval, and apparently no new science.

Got it. And good luck with it.

And yes, time is short and I am not wasting more time on it.

P.PBurnshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05781540805883519064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684843.post-29350278720301049252009-04-15T12:18:00.000-04:002009-04-15T12:18:00.000-04:00Apparently my first response was lost somwhere do ...Apparently my first response was lost somwhere do to my newbie status. Here is a shortened version.

The rapid rabies test kit concept is not intended or promoted to diagnose rabies when a human has been exposed to a potentially rabid animal.

It is designed to aid wildlife and public health researchers in the field. It provides a portable field test that will aid the researcher in determining the distribution and direction of rabies vectors.

Sorry to be so short, But I am pressed for time. More later.

John J CapriceRoccushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01409024199390737539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684843.post-5107452026637648452009-04-15T06:20:00.000-04:002009-04-15T06:20:00.000-04:00I notice that you do not mention FDA trials, a rea...I notice that you do not mention FDA trials, a real research facility, or a sponsoring university.

You do not address the use of the "penny saver" press, or the association with the fly-by night types.

You are unresponsive to the fact that this appears to be nothing more than a repackaged saliva test of the type that has been around for a long time.

Your knowledge of rabies appears to be a bit thin. Rabies treatment for someone bit by an animals does NOT require cutting off the head of the animal. If it did, we would not have treatment of people who are bitten when the animal is not in hand.

Surely you know this?

In fact, rabies testing does not do much. If you are really serious about knocking down rabies, you spread bait vaccines as is being done all over the East Coast. What you do NOT spread are rabies test kits that have false negative rates so high they come with a warning sticker! If you are bitten by an animal tested by this kit, and the results are negative, you STILL have to get the rabies shot, as who can risk a false negative? No one!

You say Mr. Huchital is a fine fellow. I did not say otherwise. I just gave people the facts as found and I will let them decided if they want to take seriously anyone associated with this marketing effort which seems unconnected to sound science (FDA? University affiliation? A real laboratory? No? I guess not).

PBurnsPBurnshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05781540805883519064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684843.post-56207424215037281042009-04-14T22:57:00.000-04:002009-04-14T22:57:00.000-04:00I'd like to set the record straight on the Rapid R...I'd like to set the record straight on the Rapid Rabies Test Kit.
This kit was developed by my lifelong friend, who has his PhD in Biochemistry. He his doctorate topic was thin layer latex chromotography. We met in College in 1972 after serving in the US Military. His integrity is unquestionable.
He became intertested in a Rabies diagnostic kit after he and his dog were attacked by a rabid racoon.
So here are some of the facts that we all need to consider.
Rabies virus is preferentially concentrated in the saliva of an infected animal. The only CDC acceptable method of testing requires that the suspect animal be killed, and the brain tissue be assayed. Let me refrain: Kill the animal, cut off the head, send it to a laboratory, dissect the brain, and use an immunoflourescant test.
A "kit" will provide wildlife researchers a more conveient and cost effected method of tracking the progression of rabies.
Most CDC lab assays are done on bats. Why bats? Bats eat insects that feed on the dead bodies of other animals.
A "kit" can be used to test suspect animals in 3rd world countries that do not have easy access to laboratories. Dangerous Rabies outbreaks are more frequent and deadly to children outside of the USA.
The applications for this "kit" are widespread and will only help in the control and vaccination efforts to combat Rabies worlwide.

The kit works! Oh yes, the disclaimer..Not really, here are the facts. If an animal has been recently infected and the virus has not entered the general circulation, there will not be any rabies virus in the brain nor the saliva. So there can never be a guarantee. Here is another example.
A woman who has been impregnated last night will not have a positve pregnancy test in the morning.
But if an animal has rabies and has not yet shown neurological symptoms, this test will have a positive result.
So not to be an anonymous coward:
John J Caprice
973-663-0047Roccushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01409024199390737539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684843.post-35001703986330782662009-02-18T16:55:00.000-05:002009-02-18T16:55:00.000-05:00Nice piece of investigative reporting--and all don...Nice piece of investigative reporting--and all done online? I assumed it was another issue of why offer a cheap alternative when we can enforce the expensive one...

For the record though, the book was written in 2003 by Catherine JM Diodati, MA, and the quote is "Rabies may be diagnosed by saliva testing and observation, but it is generally most efficiently diagnosed by examining the brain for the virus."

I just assumed this company/individual had improved on previously available practices...

Could it be a re-marketing of the same old not-too-reliable testing?
