White Ash is a good, often straight, clear, hard wood used for everything from baseball bats to lobster traps and floors to furniture.
Unfortunately, Emerald Ash Borer beetles are devastating American Ash, and one of the big trees taken out two years ago on this place was a likely victim.
To give some idea of the scale of possible Ash tree destruction ahead, U.S. forests contain approximately 8.7 billion ash trees and saplings. Think they could never get wiped out? Go look up American Chestnut.
Tree loss, tree colonization, and tree replacement is an often repeated theme in American forests. It’s an unhappy rolling story with changing characters.
