Great Falls is just above Washington, D.C., on the border of Virginia and Maryland. The river here cascades over a series of falls, dropping 76 feet in less than 1 mile as the river narrows and runs through the hard rock of Mather Gorge.
Great Falls is, I believe, the only Class VI whitewater rapids in the world located next to a major city.
I took this picture at some distance and then — on a lark — ran it through a paint program that made it took like an old magazine illustration.
