The Big Bang theory was first proposed by Georges LemaƮtre, a Belgian priest, mathematician, and cosmologist, in 1927.

LemaƮtre suggested the universe began from a "primeval atom" or super-dense state, building on Einstein's relativity, and later supported by Edwin Hubble's observations of an expanding universe.
