▪️In 2024, Shelter Animals Count estimates
5.8 million cats and dogs entered shelters and rescues across America. This breaks down to 2.9 million cats and 2.9 million dogs. This marks a 1% decrease from 2023 and an 11% decrease from 2019.
▪️Of the animals in shelters and rescues in 2024,
4.1 million were adopted into loving homes. Of this number, 2 million were cats and 2 million were dogs.
▪️In 2024 there were 748,00 Non-live Outcomes
(this includes euthanasia and died in care for both dogs and cats). Of this total, 607,000 dogs and cats were
euthanized, including 334,000 dogs and 273,000
cats.
▪️There are 13,527 animal-sheltering organizations in America. The majority (85%) of community intakes occur in shelters, with 15% coming from rescues. Of the 13,527, 9,417 are rescues or oganizations without a government contract, and 4,110 are government animal service shelters.
