A native of South Africa, Ice Plants (aka Carpobrotus edulis) were planted at Fort Funston and along other parts of the California coast in order to stabilize dunes and slow erosion.
They have certainly flourished and done their job! It should also be said that Ice Plants have spectacular flowers.
While some folks whine that Ice Plants are “non-native invasives,” I would note those terms best describe most Americans, all farm stock, and almost every plant found in their backyard yard — none of which are as useful as a dune-stabilizing Ice Plant.
