Pileated Woodpecker In the Yard

I heard him before I saw him — a loud, almost laughing call.

These are the largest extant woodpecker in North America and very similar in appearance to the now extinct Ivory Bill.

Pileated Woodpecker populations are fairly large and slowly growing. I see these woodpeckers fairly often, and hear their loud wood-knocking rather routinely, but they are wary birds and I have found them hard to photograph.
