At a flea / antique market in Berryville, Virginia, I saw this large crate with air holes on all sides. It reminded me of Henry “Box” Brown (c. 1815 – June 15, 1897), the Virginia slave who escaped to freedom at the age of 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate to abolitionists in Philadelphia. This particular box was just big enough for a man to fit inside. The seller had never heard of “Box” Brown. 🤷♂️
