This Is Now a Housing Development

I took these pictures two years ago, just a short walk from the house. This location is now a vicious tear in the dirt, ringed by erosion fencing, with plastic houses going up inside. Only I remember what wonderful things happened on this little strip of waste land along the creek, where I frequently counted as many as 24 deer at a time.

The deer are gone now, the blue heron and hawks frightened away, the raccoons and fox pulling up stakes for land that does not vibrate from the rumble of bulldozers.

No one blames population growth; they call it “progress” instead, a euphemism that hides the causal nature of the destruction, and the failure of human responsibility.
