Allegedly there are such things in western Maryland, including the mountains just 6 miles north of here, where I hike. Bears, coyotes and rattlesnakes are up there too, allegedly, but I have also seen none of those, though I would not be surprised if I did. But porcupines? That’s a bit astounding. Down from Pennsylvania, I suppose...
The sire of one of my dogs (Misto) died from porcupine quills — a porky he encountered in a New York den. They’re largely nocturnal and tend to sleep high in trees, but will tuck into rock dens.
Maryland Porcupines? Rarely seen, but apparently they exist. I learn something new everyday.
